"Luminous Lanternfly" Sleeping Eye Mask
$30.00
An insect that's a little hint of factual, a little bit inspired, and a whole lot sinister. The Luminous lanternfly (Pyrops luciferens)* is a nod towards the myth that the hollow process crowning the heads of these true bugs served as a lantern at night to guide their way. In reality, these lanternflies prefer to be active during the day, sucking up tears shed during nightmares for the precious sodium they hold.
This is a handmade eye mask made from a 51%/49% cotton/silk blend sateen, sewn and hand-finished by the artist with subtle 3D molding to give it a more bug-like shape. Made for creatures of the night who need a little darkness and a lot of glam during a midday nap. Fitted with an elastic band to fit a range of head circumferences, and wonderfully breathable against the skin. The lanternflies are a little fuller than the moth eye masks, so if you prefer more face coverage from your eye mask, this one's the one to go for.
Care and feeding of your P. luciferens:
To keep your mask in pristine shape, always hand wash with a gentle detergent made for silk (Soak is a brand I use) and lay flat to dry. Do not put this eye mask through the dryer as it may shrink. Once dry, an iron can be used on the silk setting to even out any lumps and bumps after washing (do not steam). Not vegan.
*Not an actual species of lanternfly, but inspired by other members of the genus Pyrops
